White Belt · The First Leg Lock

The ankle lock (Achilles lock) — the first leg submission, explained

White beltGi0:09Archive lesson

The caption explains that the ankle lock, also called the Achilles lock, "is typically the first leg submission taught in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" and "targets the Achilles tendon by pressing it towards the foot." In the clip Deivid, in a blue gi, sits holding the partner's trapped leg and talks the finish through, using what the caption calls an RNC grip.

The breakdown — piece by piece

STEP 1 · 0:00–0:03

Sit with the leg trapped across the body

Deivid sits on the mat with the partner's leg held across his body, his own legs wrapped over it to keep it in place and the partner's foot up by his side. He is already in the finishing position when the clip opens.

STEP 2 · 0:03–0:07

Talk it through and re-set the grip

Still holding the leg, Deivid gestures with his free hand while he explains, then reaches back in and re-sets both hands around the partner's lower leg and foot. The caption names this finish: "I used the RNC grip to finish the opposite foot."

STEP 3 · 0:07–0:09

Hug the grip in and hold the finish

Both hands come together and hug the leg in tight to his chest. Deivid looks to camera holding the finished lock.
