De La Riva Guard — Hook, Grips, and Coming Up Behind

Blue beltGi0:22Teaching demo

A titled class reel of De La Riva guard play in the gi: the bottom player puts the DLR hook in against a standing partner, holds sleeve and pant/leg grips to stretch the partner out, then transitions up and around to finish beside/behind the partner on the mat.

The breakdown — piece by piece

STEP 1 · 0:00–0:04

Set the De La Riva hook and grips

The on-screen title reads "DELARIVA GUARD — Wednesday 7PM Competition Class" (letterboxed opening frames). The instructor is on his back in a white gi against a standing partner, also in white. One foot hooks inside the partner's lead leg — the De La Riva hook — while he grips the partner's sleeve with one hand and works a second grip on the pant/leg; the free foot presses on the partner's hip area.

STEP 2 · 0:04–0:13

Stretch the partner out and manage the grips

Staying on his back, the bottom player extends the hook leg and the sleeve grip to stretch the standing partner forward and off balance. The partner bends over him, gripping at the pants to try to clear the hook, while the bottom player adjusts the hook deeper and re-sets his grips rather than letting the position go.

STEP 3 · 0:13–0:17

Transition: partner comes down

The bottom player turns under the partner's base and the partner comes down, head and hands going to the mat. The bottom player's legs stay entangled with the partner's leg through the turn as the pair go from standing-versus-guard to both being on the mat.

STEP 4 · 0:17–0:22

Come up beside/behind the partner

On the mat, the bottom player comes up beside the partner, still holding a pant/leg grip, then closes in chest-to-back/side behind the partner, who is down on a hip and a hand. The clip ends in that closed-up top/behind position.
