Gi Grips Explainer

White beltGi0:16Explainer

An extreme close-up tour of the basic gi grips — pant grip, C-grip, pocket grip, and collar grip. Correct versions get a big green check mark on screen; one wrong pant-leg grip is shown and marked with a red X.

The breakdown — piece by piece

STEP 1 · 0:00–0:03

Pant grip

A hand in a white gi sleeve grips the bottom of a black pant leg, fingers curled into the cuff of the pants. A large green check mark appears over the grip — this is the correct version.

STEP 2 · 0:04–0:06

C-grip

The same black pant leg, gripped differently: the hand comes in open, thumb out and fingers curved like the letter C, cupping under the bottom of the pant leg instead of closing into a fist.

STEP 3 · 0:06–0:08

The wrong way, marked with a red X

Right after the C-grip, the clip shows another closed grip bunching the pant leg — and a large red X appears over it. The video itself is flagging this one as wrong.

STEP 4 · 0:08–0:11

Pocket grip

At the hip of the black pants (blue belt visible above), the hand slides in flat, fingers together and thumb out, into the pants pocket, then curls into a fist inside the pocket. Green check marks confirm this version.

STEP 5 · 0:11–0:16

Collar grip

The position moves to the ground, with the partner in a white gi down on the mat. The gripping hand works up the white gi and closes on the collar/lapel by the neck, fist curled into the fabric. A green check mark closes the clip.
