Arm Triangle from Side Control (No-Gi)

Blue beltNo-Gi0:55Full lesson

How to finish the head-and-arm choke (arm triangle / kata gatame) from side control: the top player traps the partner's arm across the partner's own neck, locks his arms around the head and the trapped arm, and holds heavy top pressure through the finish. The same finish is shown from several camera angles.

The breakdown — piece by piece

STEP 1 · 0:00–0:07

Establish side control with the arm trapped

The clip opens already in side control. The top player is chest-to-chest, low and sprawled, with his arm under the partner's head. The partner's near arm is pushed up and across his own face/neck — that trapped arm is what the choke is built on.

STEP 2 · 0:08–0:15

Lock the head-and-arm

From a closer angle, the top player's arms are locked around the partner's head plus the trapped arm. His head stays low and tight to the partner's head, and he settles his weight down instead of rushing — the lock is closed before any squeeze.

STEP 3 · 0:16–0:31

Tighten and squeeze, second angle

The camera cuts to the other side and the squeeze is held for a long stretch. The top player stays heavy and patient, chest driving down, while the partner's free arm reaches and posts on the mat without finding an escape.

STEP 4 · 0:32–0:47

Drive in low and hold the finish

From a lower side angle, the top player drops to his knees beside the partner, head down, and drives his shoulder and forearm into the lock. The partner's free arm waves and extends in the last seconds of this stretch — he is reacting to the choke as the pressure peaks.

STEP 5 · 0:48–0:55

Release, reset, and recap

The top player keeps the sprawl a moment longer, then releases, comes up to his knees, and turns to talk to the camera while the partner rests. The technique is over — this is the reset/recap beat.
